I’ve photographed a lot of weddings. At the beginning of 2015, I tallied that I had passed the 100 mark. That’s a lot! Every one has qualities that makes it unique. (Is this an oxymoron? Just last night, I said to my son… “always remember how unique and one-of-a-kind you are. Just like everyone else.” He has a good sense of humor.) Anyway… while all weddings are different, they tend to have more similarities than differences.

So, when one comes along that’s really different, it can be very refreshing and rewarding. So it was for Anna and Simon’s wedding. These two had just moved to Pittsburgh, and decided to get married at the Allegheny County Courthouse on a Wednesday afternoon. In attendance: a total of 9 people, and that included me, the judge and the judge’s tipstaff.

When you imagine a picturesque location for a ceremony, you might conjure a beach, or a mountaintop, or the side of a lake. Or a magnificent cathedral like St. Paul’s in Oakland. You probably wouldn’t picture a windowless conference room. But what I learned from witnessing Anna and Simon’s wedding ceremony was how little something like that matters when you’re getting married truly for the sake of being married. These two could not stop smiling. I remember Anna actually saying those exact words. “I can’t stop smiling!” These two were so completely and ridiculously in love and thrilled to be getting married to each other, that nothing else mattered in the slightest bit.

Here are a few photos from their beautiful courthouse wedding, as well as a few portraits afterward around the city.
