To get great photos, you need great light. And the prettiest light, especially for wedding prep photos, is window light.
It’s common knowledge that you need light for photos. You’ve probably even heard a photographer gushing, “ahhhh look at the light!!!!” The key here is that we photographers aren’t referring to how bright the light is, but the direction and depth of the light. So if a room is dark, the solution isn’t to turn on an overhead light or a few table lamps. Yes, that’s more light, but lamp light and overhead light are not flattering. Instead, what we want to do is go over by the window and take advantage of the light streaming in from the side.
So, when you are choosing a place to get ready, be sure there is somewhere with windows! This is just as true for the gentlemen as it is for the women. With window light, we can create photos like these…
Next two photos I shot while working with my hilarious friend Alisa of Weddings by Alisa.
This goes for video, too. (In case you didn’t know, my sister company, Syncopated Pictures, creates beautiful, moving wedding films.) Behold the beautiful light in the scenes where Sarah’s mom helps her get her dress on.
For comparison, here are a few photos from rooms without that beautiful window light. See the difference?
